It’s OK To Be Afraid of the Universe”. Brani come “I Would Stare into the Sun with You Forever” e “Absorbed in Light” ci incoraggiano a prendere una pausa, guardare oltre la naturale superficie delle cose e scoprire a fondo il mondo che ci circonda. “Denial of Endings” e “The End Is the Beginning” conducono l’album verso una conclusione pacifica.
Love in the Void is the long-awaited twelfth album by Hammock, the duo of Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson. Over 17 years of distinguished career the pair have shaped a unique, recognisable sound; we could call it post-rock or ambient, but that would be a mere euphemism that wouldn't do the slightest justice to the undoubted beauty of the sublime sonic journeys they've accustomed us to. Listening to their albums carries the mind towards a feeling of inner peace and magnetic introspection, a sort of timeless balm of serenity, a real godsend in these tumultuous, chaotic times. This kind of sonic spell is only possible when music is composed by sensitive, talented souls; Marc and Andrew's life experiences, including the negative ones, have certainly helped forge their skill and make their records genuine masterpieces in which it's wonderful to lose yourself.
On their more recent works, Hammock had slightly set aside drums and percussion, preferring more stretched-out, atmospheric territory and favouring the ambient side of their music: the splendid trilogy of Mysterium, Universalis and Silencia focused on working through a major loss (Byrd's twenty-year-old nephew) with minimal textures; the more recent Elsewhere painted rarefied scenes of post-pandemic solitude and introspection. Love in the Void, on the other hand, promised a return to a more physical, tangible sound, with greater importance given to guitars, bass and drums, and thus to expressing themselves with sounds more typical of post-rock, along the lines of other giant albums in their discography; to name a couple, 2012's Departure Songs or 2016's Everything and Nothing.
The announcement of the record and the release of the first singles had already set off a wave of enthusiasm among fans, and listening to the full work fully confirmed already sky-high expectations. Hammock have surpassed their already considerable skills, creating a work that is a tribute to their sonic mastery and to the evolution of their sound: metaphorically, Love In the Void represents a sort of release of pent-up energy that, instead of giving in and making room for sadness, blossoms into a euphoric, brilliant melody full of life. It's an album that seethes with burning passion, awakened by the need to break free of frustration and regret. The compositions resonate with a deep desire to look to the future with awareness, living the present fully and cherishing the meaningful bonds that give life its value. With 13 tracks and a running time of an hour and 12 minutes, the album flows like a river in flood, conveying wonderful vibrations that leave a lasting groove in the soul. Love in the Void was recorded in Nashville and co-produced with Grammy-nominated engineer Chad Howat. The album features Christine Byrd (Lumenette) and her ethereal voice, along with Matt Kidd (Slow Meadow) on string arrangements, Ellen Story on violin and viola and Jake Finch on drums. About the concept behind the work, Byrd explained that life can sometimes feel empty, yet there are moments when everything seems shot through with an ineffable, breathtaking beauty; rather than seeing the void as something negative, it can be the very point through which love enters, and if we could all recognise our own inner emptiness we might learn to be more vulnerable with one another, to love each other better and make love a verb – choosing to love in the void means choosing each other. The duo described the record as their loudest album to date: although the sonic substance is unmistakably Hammock, this is an excellent work in which shoegaze guitars shine, with plenty of post-rock-style crescendos and drums that are very present and important in the writing. On this new album, their twelfth, the duo have kept intact the sense of orchestral grandeur that defines them while exploring a more classic, conventional song form; the result is a work of rare beauty in which instrumental post-rock, ambient and neoclassical music blend harmoniously into a unique, hypnotic sound. The emphatic drums and guitars take centre stage, giving the record remarkable strength and physicality; the fluidity of the tracks and their ability to stick in your mind create an intense, engaging musical experience that embraces both boldness and vulnerability.
The opening track, "Procession", is an elegant introduction recalling the frozen, timeless sonic lands of Sigur Rós' (). The dreamlike, suspended atmosphere is an invitation to discover the sonic world that follows, preparing us for the thrilling musical journey ahead. But it's with "Love in the Void" and its enchanting elegance that the real musical experience begins; the true magic starts among the delicate hits of soft, refined ambient drums, over which a gently shaped guitar weaves nostalgic textures. As the track progresses the intensity rises, thanks to the reverb-drenched guitar phrase growing ever sharper and more piercing, lifting the composition towards a peak that bursts into a joyful explosion; the soul vibrates with colours and beams of light embracing the void, illuminating every thought and leaving behind a trail of peace and serenity, as if we'd been wrapped in a warm, protective embrace. "UnTruth" is a perfect symbiosis of ambient and indie shoegaze. The track features acoustic guitars brushing light rhythms, voices floating in relaxing reverb and warm, bright melodies that warm the soul; all of it makes a fitting introduction to the melancholic emotions evoked by the next song, "It's OK To Be Afraid of the Universe". Hammock know how to play with the listener's emotions, and here they build a feeling of enormous nostalgia that nonetheless exudes determination and optimism. In this track the Americans' compositional mastery evokes a scene that fills the heart with warmth and awareness, letting us grasp what we'd like for our future: the listen leads us on a fantastic journey across vast horizons and dreamlike landscapes. It's as if we could take flight and sail the skies without borders or limits, reaching the deepest essence of the universe. Our souls merge with the infinite and inner peace becomes a tangible reality. Without giving up, we keep moving forward with our gaze on the future and the awareness that every experience is a precious gift. On this endless journey, we discover the true essence of life and the joy of existing. This joy is skilfully sketched in "Release", which best sums up the post-rock tradition, Hammock-style: the track, growing in intensity like a tsunami of emotion, drags the listener into a euphoric, regenerating experience. The drums pound hard, letting the guitar weave an enchanting melody, and as the music flows the mind is flooded with images recalling memories, dreams and hopes scattered through the gaps of a pulsing rhythm full of life. When the music suddenly stops, you're left holding your breath with a sense of emptiness that's hard to put into words: it's as if the music had invited us to dive into the ocean of our emotions and then left us to sail this vastness alone. And yet, in this seemingly empty silence, we find an inner calm and a strong sense of peace and safety. The following "Gods Becoming Memories", with its very fascinating title, captures the listener with its melancholic, deeply evocative atmosphere. Echoes of Sigur Rós' () are evident here too, and feelings similar to those of the opening "Procession" create a narrative unity within the album. The delicacy of the melody and instrumentation makes "Gods Becoming Memories" a moment of deep introspection and reflection within the record; the distorted guitar and the drum hits midway create an intense, powerful atmosphere, with an essential rhythm that gives the track a sense of solemnity. This contrast between the power of the guitar and the simplicity of the drum rhythm is deeply moving, before flowing into delicate, well-judged piano notes at the close. Tracks like "I Would Stare into the Sun with You Forever" and "Absorbed in Light" encourage us to take a pause, look beyond the natural surface of things and truly discover the world around us. Light is everywhere, even if we often take it for granted. These tracks invite us to observe, experience and appreciate the hidden beauty found in every moment of our lives, and to immerse ourselves in that light. "Undoing" runs on the same tracks: the processed, reverb-drenched voice leads a track with a more pop structure, which still keeps interest high with joyful sections and a modern sound. The reassuring presence of the backing vocals and the use of a many-repeat delay on the voices give the main melody an almost primordial, alien touch. In this way the track manages to be familiar yet still surprising. In "Will We Ever Be Ourselves Again", Hammock explore the theme of authenticity and reconnecting with yourself. The composition evokes a melancholic, cinematic atmosphere through the combined effect of slow percussion, the guitar melody and the strings that emphasise it further. The track expresses a strong sense of emotion that touches the depths of the soul, making us question our ability to overcome life's hardships by truly rediscovering our inner authenticity. The music flows with the delicacy of dew on a cold but sunny winter morning, creating a harmony and fluidity you can feel in every note. All the musical elements – from the slow, wise percussion to the guitar's melodic lines, from the choirs to the strings – work together to create an experience of ecstatic beauty. "Denial of Endings" and "The End Is the Beginning" lead the album to a peaceful conclusion. The former carries us into a sonic world of delicate ambient atmospheres, with a harmonious blend of male and female voices recalling the shoegaze style, evoking both the ethereal essence of Slowdive and the soft sweetness of Beach House. With its combination of welcoming reverbs and soft tones, this track invites us to float in an oasis of peace and bliss. The latter, instead, conveys a strong sense of fulfilment and satisfaction, thanks to the serenity shining through every guitar note and the pristine peace that reigns supreme in the melody.
In conclusion, with Love in the Void Hammock have surpassed every expectation and given us a stunning musical experience. Their distinctive sound hasn't undergone any major evolution, partly because returning to the sounds of another period of your career isn't exactly a form of evolution. And yet in this case it is, because the Americans have perfected one particular shade of their sound, coming close to perfection and confirming that they know how to write perfectly focused records, relentless in slipping gently into the hearts of those lucky enough to hear them. In this work you can strongly feel their search for light and positivity, with tracks that encourage us to appreciate and experience the nuances of what we take for granted. The record is an explosion of emotions flowing with delicacy and a perfect sense of cohesion; despite its demanding length, you truly never tire of listening to it. Love in the Void takes a permanent place among the best works Hammock have ever made: an essential, enveloping work of art that leaves you completely enraptured.
